Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
After a wet and wild week, capped off with an afternoon navigating the muddy landscapes of Drax for our House Cross Country, we are definitely ready for the weekend! Here is a round-up our Week 4 highlights.
In English this week we started by learning all about the perfect tenses (present, past and future) and understanding how to use them and identify them. Next, we enjoyed reading about Jim's escape from the workhouse in Street Child and write our own first person versions. In Drama this week, we have been working on our Victorian monologues (as a rich or poor person) and were excited to perform to the class! In Maths, Mr Wildman has been stretching our mental and written calculations of decimals using all four operations!
In Latin, we read the story of Odysseus and the Cyclops and discussed the different details we know from other retellings. We have varying versions because myths were originally passed down by oral tradition. Then we completed a translation about 4 important roles in the Roman army, before making a start in creating a fact file about the standard bearer, flag bearer, horn player and centurion, which we’ll continue next week. In Science this week, we carried out practical investigations of the properties of materials, focusing on flexibility, solubility, and electrical conductivity. Working in teams, we planned our own investigations and completed the write-ups. In Computing, we continued entering data into a spreadsheet, tracking the length of daylight in different parts of the world.
In History, we have been researching one of the most renowned Victorian scientists, Charles Darwin, as part of our preparation for a Geography lesson. During this lesson, we participated in the Darwin200 project - a special online session featuring historians, geological conservationists, and scientists. These experts are currently undertaking a global voyage aboard the 'Oosterschelde,' a ship designed to resemble the HMS Beagle, retracing Darwin's iconic journey!
Have a great weekend.
