Year 2

In Maths this week, we focused on multiplication and division by 2, 5 and 10; recapping the basics, but also building on this knowledge with arrays, problem solving and the inverse. In English, our unit on The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch took on a creative direction. Having planned their own new versions of the story last week, where they changed various elements but kept the dilemma of a missing lunch the same, the children had the chance to make puppets of their new story characters. They then rehearsed and acted out puppet shows of their new stories, after which they put their stories into writing.

In Science, we learnt about recycling and did a fun sorting activity where we worked in a small group to decide where certain items should be recycled. We also learned about the process of recycling plastic bottles into new items for reuse. We continued exploring Samuel Pepys in History, and the children had a go at writing messages in Shelton’s code, which Pepys used to keep his thoughts secret. In Geography we explored Chinese New Year, as part of our ‘Let’s Explore China’ topic. This was followed up with our delicious feast day lunch on Wednesday, complete with noodles and fortune cookies! On Friday, the Year 2 children braved the rain and mud to run their house cross country races at Drax and did themselves proud.

Due to the workshop being held on Wednesday, there will be no swimming next week. Instead, Year 2 will go to Drax on Tuesday with Year 1. They will therefore need to come to school in their Games kit on Tuesday, please.

Science

As part of our learning on changing materials in Science, we will be making catapults in our lessons next week. Please could your child bring in a sturdy Y-shaped/fork stick to use for making their hand-held catapults. Please bring to school on Monday 10th February.

Recorders

Please be reminded that Year 2 will need their recorders next week (2W on Tuesday and 2D on Friday).
