Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
Welcome to our Week 3 newsletter!
In History, we have been researching the Great Exhibition of 1851 and learning about all of the amazing inventions and curiosities you could see. We were really surprised to learn that the money raised from this epic event led to the purchase of the area of land and building of the V&A, Science museum, Natural History museum, Royal Albert Hall and Imperial College! It looked such an amazing building - we wished it was still around to see. In Geography, we undertook a Geog-Challenge to name and locate the key rivers of the UK before investigating what causes different types of flooding, as part of our Water World topic.
In Latin, Year 5 enjoyed finishing the scripts for their short Latin plays about a visit to the doctor and preparing background slides. After some rehearsal time, we had the pleasure of watching these scenes, which were generally more comedic in nature than tragic! It was a challenge to only speak in Latin, but everyone did really well. It's a good job 'Aaaaahhh!' is the same in both languages! In French, this week, we have been talking about pets, learning new vocabulary, and exploring the different plural forms of nouns.
In English this week we have been looking into life in a Victorian workhouse, as Jim has to do in Street Child. We have been using figurative devices and the senses to describe the workhouse and have been learning the importance of creating our own success criteria for creative writing. In Science this week, we wrapped up our topic on Earth and Space by reviewing the key learning points. Our next topic is the properties of materials, where we started exploring how and why materials are chosen for specific purposes. In Computing, we are learning how to create a line graph using data about the length of daytime in different parts of the world.
Have a great weekend!
