Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
A wonderful week with a fantastic trip to the Royal Observatory Greenwich and Willington's own Engineering day! The trip to the ROG was so much fun - we loved meeting the astronomer and watching the planetarium show.
In Maths we have been working on being more precise when drawing acute, obtuse and reflex angles. Having to be precise has created quite a challenge for some of us! In English this week we have been analysing poems that describe memories and then written our own poetry, recalling our personal experiences of the Covid lockdowns. We also learned about using semicolons this week and described a picture using semicolons and figurative language.
In History, we undertook a timed comprehension on the Transatlantic Slave trade (we did this before learning the history as Mrs Draper said this will improve our non-fiction comprehension skills!). We then looked at reasons why countries wanted colonies in Africa between the 1600 and 1900s. In Geography, we learnt how to infer from a dual axis climate graph and use this information to write accurate descriptions of the climate of Morocco in Northern Africa.
In Drama this week we had been busy putting the final touches to our assembly performance (that we did today!); everyone said it was a brilliant opener for our Engineering Day! Ms Wilkinson said we have made impressive strides in our projection skills and audience engagement techniques. Our assembly showcased some of the engineering achievements from Ancient Greece, China, Egypt and Rome, and Mr Brown said it, 'left us all impressed with these early innovators. Well done, Year 5!'
In Latin, we completed a grammar activity on conjunctions and then translated a story about a precious ring. There was just time to listen to an extended (and highly amusing) retelling of the myth of Midas and the Golden Touch, which we will be rewriting in our own words next lesson.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
