Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
This week in Reception, we had a busy and exciting time exploring new learning themes! We recapped our tricky words and made our very own tricky word mats to help us with our reading and writing. We also learned a new tricky witch digraph, ‘oi,’ and practised it through fun activities like coin rubbing, which helped us reinforce the sound while exploring different textures.
Following our reading of Night Monkey, Day Monkey by Julia Donaldson, we learned about diurnal and nocturnal animals. The children sorted animals into these two categories and painted beautiful pictures of them. We also explored different types of monkeys, learning fascinating facts about them. The proboscis monkey was definitely the funniest, with its big nose making everyone giggle! The children also learned to draw their own hanging monkey, carefully adding details to make them look playful and cheeky.
We explored shadows, experimenting with how light creates different shapes and patterns. In maths, we explored the concepts of heavy and light using weighing scales, encouraging the children to compare and estimate the weight of different objects.
We ended the week with an exciting Engineering Day focused on the Engineering of Ancient Civilisations. The children took part in creative and problem-solving challenges inspired by ancient structures and inventions. It was wonderful to see them working together, using their creativity and critical thinking skills to build and explore. It was a fantastic week of learning and discovery!
Have a lovely weekend.
