WILLINGTON PREP MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Welcome
Music is integral to Willington life, whether it be in assemblies, our choirs and instrumental ensembles, performances, or as part of daily learning. The overriding ethos is that music is inclusive and accessible to all, whilst offering additional challenges to our gifted musicians. Curriculum and co-curricular provision are complementary and while one is compulsory, it is anticipated that the latter will be a choice for the majority of students in some capacity.
In addition to helping develop technical and musical skills and understanding, participating in musical learning has the capacity to develop students’ emotional well-being, ability in self-expression, cognitive performance, spatial and creative thinking, appreciation for and awareness of others, teamwork skills, self-discipline and coordination (to name but a few). Music is a science, it is mathematical, it is artistic, it is language, it is historical and it is so much more than the sum of its parts: it connects the disciplines of scholastic learning in a unique and valuable way and enriches lives at whatever level it is experienced.
Whilst focus on performing, listening/appraising and composition is key, development of musical literacy, vocabulary, instrumental, technological and vocal skills, and confidence is essential. Opportunities to enjoy and participate in the performance of live music are also an important part of our provision.
Above all, the musical programme at Willington is designed to be fun and satisfying, encouraging curiosity and a life-long appreciation for music and the benefits it brings to individuals and society as a whole.
