WILLINGTON PREP MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Class Lessons
With the solid foundations established in previous years, these year-groups continue to consolidate and develop their performing, listening, composition and appraisal skills.
All pupils receive a 55-minute class music lesson led by the Director of Music in our well-equipped, spacious Music Room.
A class-based instrumental focus is provided for Years 3 and 5 with violin and ukulele taught respectively. By Year 6, the children regularly use their varied instrumental skills in class-based activities and development of their ensemble skills is assured.
Over the course of KS2, students study Carnival of the Animals, The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, The Planets and undertake units of work on Music and the Media, Film Music, Gamelan Music, World Music, Musical Elements, Songwriting and a history of Western Music . Music theory is explored in both discrete and integrated ways.
Annually, Year 6 perform a musical production in their final term at the school. This is a fantastic opportunity for cross-curricular learning, as well as a spectacular musical showcase!
Co-curricular opportunities are enjoyed by numerous students in this age-group - please select the Co-Curricular' heading above for further information.
Choirs
Years 3, 4 , 5 and 6 participate in a 55-minute Choir session per week. Choir leaders are chosen each term to enable individuals to further develop their skills and confidence. Repertoire is drawn from a wide variety of genres and can be coordinated with curriculum work in other subjects where appropriate. Choirs will perform regularly in school and community events and festivals. A carefully chosen programme ensures development of skills in solo and part-singing, accompanied and unaccompanied, as well as ensuring the development of healthy posture and vocal technique.
Private Music Lessons
Optional private music tuition is available and is taken by a large proportion of students - please select the 'Private Music Lessons' heading above for further information.
