WILLINGTON PREP MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Class Lessons
Music lessons are designed to create solid foundations in the musical skills of listening, performing, composing and appraising and engage students with enthusiasm for musical learning.
All pupils receive a 40-minute class music lesson led by the Director of Music in their classroom environment and access the specialist Music Room from the end of the Autumn Term.
As singing well is such an essential skill for musicianship, it is the primary focus of the music curriculum at this age and strongly influenced by the Kodaly method. Please visit https://kodaly.org.uk/about-us/kodaly-approach/ for further information.
Musical vocabulary is embedded from a very early age. Work on establishing a steady sense of pulse and rhythm is also key. Body percussion, classroom instruments and movement activities all contribute to its development.
Children are introduced to a variety of orchestral and world instruments to enhance their awareness of various sound sources and perhaps inspire them to learn one of these at a later stage. Musical appreciation and responses are encouraged by listening to a variety of Western and world music genres.
Opportunities to experience live music are provided wherever possible.
Communal singing and performing is supported through Assemblies and productions, such as the Christmas Nativity and other special events, e.g Mother's Day, Celebration Day. The annual House Music Festival is another opportunity for Reception children to sing in a House Choir and perform solo pieces.
Private Music Lessons
Optional private music tuition is available to Reception children from the Summer Term and is taken in consultation with your child's class teacher- please select the 'Private Music Lessons' heading above for further information. Nursery children are not eligible to apply.
