WILLINGTON PREP MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Class Lessons
Establishing solid musical foundations is a key focus of learning for these year-groups who are developing their performing, listening, composition and appraisal skills.
All pupils receive a 55-minute class music lesson each week led by the Director of Music in our well-equipped, spacious Music Room.
A class-based instrumental focus is provided as Year 1 develop skills in playing a range of unpitched percussion instruments and Year 2 learn to play mallet percussion and the recorder.
Over the course of KS1, students study Musical Contrasts, Kodaly Rhythm and Pitch, Graphic Scores, Musical Stories, Glock Around the Clock, Recorder and Singing Games.
Trips to see live orchestral music are organised annually.
All children participate in Assembly singing and a Christmas Show performance. The annual House Music Festival is another opportunity for children to sing in a House Choir and perform solo pieces.
Co-curricular opportunities are enjoyed by numerous students in this age-group - please select the Co-Curricular heading above for further information.
Choir
All children participate in a 30-minute KS1 Choir session per week. Choir leaders are chosen each term to enable individuals to further develop their skills and confidence. Repertoire is drawn from a wide variety of genres and can be coordinated with curriculum work in other subjects where appropriate. Choirs will perform regularly in school events. Being part of a choir develops skills in musical discipline, teamwork in a musical context and the joy of singing in a larger group. It is also a fantastic opportunity to consolidate and develop the children's vocal pitch control, which is a significant feature of the Kodaly method included regularly in class lessons.
Private Music Lessons
Optional private music tuition is available and is taken by a large proportion of students in consultation with the class teacher - please select the 'Private Music Lessons' heading above for further information.
