It’s great to be in sixth grade at West Side! Sixth graders are the “seniors” of elementary, on the edge of making that leap out of the elementary nest and spreading their wings as Eagles. Sixth grade is an opportunity for students to enjoy hands-on learning, problem-solving, and decision-making to aid them in developing skills for independent learning which will prepare them for high school and beyond. Classes are departmentalized starting in 5th grade, so students get the benefit of a two-year relationship with a team of teachers who work closely together to plan and construct meaningful and engaging learning experiences. Sixth graders have classroom jobs to facilitate the smooth operation of class routines, as well as responsibilities which benefit the whole school like fire marshals and sound crew. And of course, as the senior members of elementary school, sixth graders often have the opportunity to serve by running errands, helping with physical tasks, or assisting teachers with younger students.
