November 6

Good evening, families! With this new style of newsletters, if you need to refer back to a previous week's newsletter, you can click on the "Newsletter" tab and select the date of the newsletter you would like to read.

Math

As you saw, your child brought home their chapter 3 pre/post test. For some students, the concept of regrouping is still difficult for them. If you're interested in your child getting more practice, please utilize the chapter 3 homework pages that went home, or click here for a choice board of items your child can do. Retakes will be held on Friday, November 17th. If your child is interested in retaking the assessment, please click here.

Additionally, students were sent home with chapter 4 and 5 intro pages and homework pages. We will be learning multiplication and division strategies simultaneously.

ELA

Students took their end of trimester 1 writing assessment this past week. We also worked on brainstorming verbs while practicing in a fun way with the game of "Padoodle." Ask your child how the game works!

Little Buddies

On Monday, we helped little buddies with their first experience with a breakout box! Big buddies guided them on how to read clues and solve them. I'm always impressed with how the kids put their little buddy first and guide them.

Odds and Ends

  • If you did not sign up for a parent/teacher conference, a slip of paper went home with an assigned time. If the time listed works, please sign and return it to school. If not, please write a few options on times that will work.
  • Huge THANK YOU for making our fall basket such a success! It raised our class $750! WHOA!
  • From WAVE: The Olympic Triathlon is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It isn’t just about fundraising but is also about celebrating what sets us apart from so many other schools: Our three specialties of Art, PE and Spanish! This year we will be fundraising to customize our beautiful new campus with things like shade, soccer goals and bike racks.
    • On Thursday, November 30th our students will participate in a special day of learning on the Olympic Triathlon Event Day. This day is completely staffed and planned by our parent volunteers alongside some fabulous WCS staff members. We need your help to make this day fun and successful for our school and students. If you would like to get involved with planning please contact Amber Hustead, WAVE President, at amberhustead@gmail.com.
    • Have you had a chance to checkout our new online donation system? You are able to personalize a family donation site to send to friends and family, post on social media or show to co-workers in the office. Please visit http://pledgestar.com/westlakecharter to set up your family donation page.
    • Our school wide goal is to have each student contribute $180 which represents $1 for every day of school. We encourage families to give what they can whether it is less or more than the goal amount. We are striving for 100% participation from all students to contribute at least $5 towards our Olympic Triathlon Fundraising efforts.
    • We will be collecting checks and cash at the Maybrook entrance on Tuesday mornings from 8-8:40am. Students will receive prizes and recognition based on online and in person donations.

Book Recommendation

We will be moving on to diving deep into non-fiction text in the 2nd trimester. This charming reference book takes a closer look at the things that surround kids every day and how they work—from cars to vacuum cleaners, animal bodies to humans. More than 100 colorful photos are paired with age-appropriate text featuring answers to questions like "How do chameleons change color?" "How do refrigerators stay cold?" and "How does my body heal?" This book inspires kids to be curious, ask questions, and explore the world around them.
