January 16, 2018

We're one week back into it from break! Read below to see what we've been up to and what's coming up.

Math

  • We spent time reviewing the chapter 6-9 math test students took before winter break. These tests along with a study guide went home in your child's Friday Folder. If your child is interested in retaking the assessment, please click here.
  • We have moved on to chapter 13, area and perimeter. This math topic will go until 2/9.

ELA/Social Studies

  • We've learned a lot about why our country has a constitution and how our three branches of government use this important document to make decisions. With this, students have been making connections and writing their thoughts in a learning log.

Odds and Ends:

  • For students that didn't finish NWEA last week, we will continue this week.
  • GATE Testing: Spring 2018 GATE testing referral forms for students currently enrolled in grades 1st - 8th will be accepted from January 8, 2018 - February 2, 2018. Click HERE for the parent referral form. Click HERE for the WCS 2017-2018 GATE Testing Timeline and click Click HERE for a GATE overview flyer.
  • AS Live Student Sign Up: The winter session of After-School LIVE starts Monday, January 22nd! Please Click HERE to fill out the interest form for your Explorer. Sign-ups run until Tuesday, January 16 at 8:00pm. Email Allison Chavez with any questions live@westlakecharter.com.
  • Communications Change: We received feedback in the Parent Survey about communications from WCS, so we have made a couple of updates. Starting this week, we will send an email and a text message instead of a phone call. The text message will have the link to our weekly newsletter, and a link to a voice recording for those who prefer to hear the weekly newsletter rather than read it. The voice recording will contain the same information that the newsletter has, but in auditory form, like a weekly radio broadcast. So if you process information visually, read our newsletter, however, if you are more of an auditory learner, listen to the recording. Thank you for giving us feedback to improve our communication. Click HERE to update your text message preferences.
  • If your Explorer is interested in being a part of the Nature Bowl team have them check in with Mrs. Miksits (4th grade teacher) before next Friday, January 19th. Click here for the glossary of words Explorers interested in Nature Bowl will be tested on next Friday.

My Princess and Me Dance: The 6th annual My Princess & Me Dance is on February 3rd from 6pm to 8pm. Dads, grandpas, uncles, friends and father-figures are invited to escort their princess (ages 4-13) to this community favorite. The evening includes dancing, dessert, photos and many unforgettable memories. Purchase tickets and learn more by Clicking HERE. This incredible community event isn’t possible without volunteers. Please Click HERE to help make it a success. Thank you!

Book Recommendation

Another podcast recommendation for this week! Going along with our social studies theme of American Heroes, Short and Curly ties in quite nicely.

SHORT & CURLY is a fast-paced fun-filled ethics podcast for kids and their parents, with questions and ideas to really get you thinking. It asks curly questions like about animals, technology, school, pop culture and the future.

SHORT & CURLY is especially designed to be listened to alone or as a family, with questions to think about and time to discuss it together.
