Math

  • We have been working hard on area this past week! Students used decomposing, which they learned during multiplication, to help them find the area of larger rectangles. We also practiced finding the area of composite figures, which can be very tricky for students, especially when there are missing side lengths. Click here to watch a few Flipgrids on what we've been doing! The password is: d111.
  • We will wrap up our area/perimeter unit this Friday with the end of chapter test.

ELA/Social Studies

  • Students have been researching an American hero, taking notes on their biography, obstacles faced, and contributions. They are turning these notes into an informational paper. Their final product will be recorded and on display during Open House!

Odds and Ends

  • Six Flags Read To Succeed: K-6 Grade students and families there is just under one month left to get the 6 hours of reading completed for the FREE ticket to Six Flags! Students can read or be read to. Simply record titles on the log, fill out the log completely, and return it by the deadline of February 26th (since the 23rd is during Westlake's week off in February). The logs will be picked up on Monday, February 26th. Logs can also be scanned and emailed to Holly Hein at h.hein@sbcglobal.net. Thanks! Happy Reading!
  • Valentine's Day: A note regarding Valentine's Day went home in your child's Friday Folder. Please remember: if your child decides to bring in Valentine's Day cards, make sure they have one for everyone. I am also asking that any items brought in are peanut-free due to an allergy in the class.

Important Dates

  • Wednesday, February 14 - Valentine's Day Celebration
  • Friday, February 16 - Spirit Day: Dress Like a Star/Hollywood, WCS Talent Show
  • Monday, February 19-Friday, February 23: NO SCHOOL - President's Week

Book Recommendation

Recently, we have finished reading two chapter books in class: The Wild Robot and Dyamonte Daniels: Almost Zero. Both books have great options to continue the story!
