Fall Fun

Learning the Pledge of Allegiance

Students have been busy learning the Pledge of Allegiance and they are now very good at saying it each morning during morning announcements. This is one of our History and Social Studies standards in Kindergarten. This short video is a great kid friendly introduction to the Pledge. Ask your child to recite it to you.

During language arts time this week we read both of these stories several times. While having very different titles, these stories have many things that are the same. Click on the book pictures and have your child listen to the stories again.   Ask your child to tell you about some of the ways they are the same and different.   What story did they enjoy more?

Kindergarten Sight Words

We have 20 Sight words that we will learn by the end of Kindergarten.

Below are the 5 words that have been introduced to your child so far. Please try and point these words out to your children as you read to them. Also have them try and find the words on their own.

Month One is Done!

Alphabet and Names

During the first few weeks we spent a lot of time with the alphabet, getting to know our friends names and practicing writing our own names. In Kindergarten we are asking students to use a capital letter for the first letter of their name and lowercase letters for the remaining letters. Please encourage your child to do this whenever they write their names. We also spend a few moments each week practicing the sign language alphabet. Ask your child to show you the sign for the first letter in their name.

Kindergarten Sight Words

We have 20 Sight words that we will learn by the end of Kindergarten. A full list of the 20 words will be sent home soon.

Below are the 2 words that have been introduced to your child so far. Please try and point these words out to your children as you read to them. Also have them try and find the words on their own.

READING with RAZ-Kids

RAZ-Kids is an interactive reading program for students to practice reading fluency and comprehension. The students have a login and a password to get into their reading account. I am able to monitor the students' progress and change their reading level. These levels are all individually based on each child's reading level and are adjusted to reflect their abilities. The students can listen to a story, read a story out loud and then take a comprehension quiz. Each child earns points or stars to use for their RAZ Rocket which allows them to buy things for their rocket. You will receive a login instructions with your child's unique login and password next week. Let me know if you have any questions or problems accessing the site. This is a wonderful tool that will allow your child to build literacy skills. However, I strongly encourage parents to continue reading to their children daily as this is still a very important piece in each child's reading development.

Emotional Regulation

As you know we are learning about many different things in Kindergarten. Along with reading, math, science and social studies children are also learning how to recognize their emotions. We are using the chart and language above to help students identify where they are at emotionally with the goal of being in the green zone to learn best. Children are being taught tools and strategies to get themselves into the green zone. Ask your child about the zones... they are experts! Here is a song we've been singing when we learn about the zones of regulation.
