Celebrating 100 Days in K!

We celebrated the 100th day of school at the start of the month. It's hard to believe we are over half way through Kindergarten. Students had a great time dressing up as 100 year old people on this day. Check out some of the great costumes below!  I have also included a link to a song we listened to as part of our celebration that day. It is a great way to build your child's counting and number recognition.

Author Study: EZRA JACK KEATS

We will begin an author study of Ezra Jack Keats in March. During this time we will read many of his books and talk about the ways they are similar. Many of them tell the story of a boy named Peter and his neighborhood.

We will use his books to start our study of our community. We will build our own “communities” on our bulletin board using Keats style of illustrating. During March students will create their homes and some buildings in Westford. For a good home-school connection, check out some Ezra Jack Keats books from the library!

Thank you to our party volunteers!  The kids had a great time.

Recess

We go outside each day the weather permits.  Please send your child in appropriate gear for the temperature.  All of the snow is gone on the playground area so you do NOT need to send in snow pants and boots anymore.  Unless of course if it snows again then please send the snow gear again.  Thank you.

100 Day & Valentine's Day

Tomorrow, 2/5/24, we will celebrate the 100th day of school by doing lots of fun counting activities.  On the 100th day of school your child is invited to Dress up like a 100 year old person.  This is an optional activity and a note will come home last week with details. Click here for dress-up ideas.

We will also have our Valentine's Day party on February 14th. Class lists for valentines were sent home already.  Please let me know if you need another copy and I will send it home with your child tomorrow.

KIndness Week

We had a wonderful week.  Each day we were presented with a new kindness challenge and everyone did an amazing job meeting each challenge!  Thanks Mr. Middlemiss for organizing this important week again this year!  Taking special time out of our busy days to focus on kindness will always be time well spent.

Each day your child participates in UFLI as part of their literacy instruction.  UFLI Foundations is an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. For more information on this literacy program and to find ways to help support your child's literacy development please click on this link.   The link will take you to the University of Florida Literacy Institute’s Parent Resource Hub which is a collection of web-based language and literacy resources was compiled and curated by UFLI faculty and graduate students.

Winter Math

We did lot of fun math activities and used some fancy math vocabulary words this month. CAPACITY, WEIGHT AND LENGTH.  Students have also been having a fun time with a new math game called "Monster Squeeze."  This game is designed to build and strengthen your child's number sense. Later this week I will send home a version of it for you to play with your child.

We also have been working with teen numbers and deepening our understanding about a teen number being made up of a group of ten and some more.  Please encourage your child to talk to you about what a teen number is. Check out the link to the song below that we have been using to reinforce teen numbers.

Recess & Snow

We go outside each day, weather permitting.   Please send your child to school with a hat and mittens or gloves each day. Snow pants and boots are required to play in the snow.  Please label everything … even mittens!

Please have your child bring hard soled slippers, sneakers, or shoes to change into for the school day.  Boots are too hot and messy for children to be wearing all day long.

The February & March sign-up went out last month.  Please use the link on my website to access the volunteer calendars. (See image below). I also sent a group email indicating the sign-up calendars were open.

Welcome to our class Svea!

In January we welcomed a new student to the class!  We are very excited to have Svea join us.  Please see the updated friendship list went home earlier this month that includes her.

Thank you PTO!

We had an amazing whole school enrichment program visit us last week.  The PTO sponsored this event thanks in part to all of your generous donations and fundraising efforts.    Please see the pictures below of the Bubble Man.  It was great fun and 3 of my students were chosen as volunteers!  Thank you again PTO.
