Student Information

Backpacks

Although backpacks are allowed, students must utilize their lockers at a minimum of three times per day. It is strongly encouraged these times include; prior to homeroom, prior to lunch, and after 9th period. It is recommended students switch their morning supplies with their afternoon supplies before lunch. Due to space limitations in hallways and classrooms as well as safety concerns, students should not be carrying full backpacks from class to class.

Club Program

The club program is designed to offer students a wide variety of opportunities to interact with peers and teachers.  Clubs are centered on a theme of personal development, education for social competence and skills for continuous learning.  The list of clubs varies from year to year depending upon the interests of students and staff.  A club list and schedule will be published after the beginning of school.  If students are interested in the formation of a new club, they should present ideas to a teacher, counselor or the principal.

Co-Curricular Activities

Students are encouraged to participate in school-sponsored clubs, before/after-school activities and interscholastic sports as part of their social/physical development.

Core Ethical Values

We believe a school district excels when all members exhibit strong character including:

Integrity/Honesty:  demonstrated through truthfulness, thoughtfulness and tolerance in work, language, and actions.  This value is exhibited when members are accountable for their actions and take responsibility for their decisions.

Work Ethic:  reflected by optimum personal effort and pride, diligence, perseverance and the ability to meet challenges in all areas with confidence.

Sportsmanship:  shown through respect for the rules of fair play, graciousness in victory or defeat, support and respect for team members, and by representing Westfield in a dignified respectable manner.

Working from these beliefs, all members of the Westfield School district community have certain rights that promote and support a safe and productive school environment.

Counseling Services

The Intermediate Schools have three counselors.  The counselors assist in a variety of areas including orientation, reporting student progress, and both individual and group counseling.

Students are offered the opportunity to participate in skill-building groups with emphasis on wellness, responsible citizenship, education planning and career development, empowering youth in positive ways to increase productivity and student readiness.  The counselors guide students to build skills for life in areas of academic study, communications skills, decision-making, problem solving, peer relationships, motivation and conflict resolution.  The counselors work very closely with the teachers to assure the best educational environment for each student.  Working together is a vital link in the delivery of a coordinated developmental student-oriented program

Expectations

It is expected that students follow rules on a daily basis by working to the best of your ability, following the directions of your teachers, and behaving respectfully.  Please remember that you are the one who will choose to conduct yourself appropriately.  Following school rules and the directions of your teachers will allow you to enjoy a positive learning experience.

When a student is unable to follow school rules, consequences will apply.  These may include meeting with the assistant principal or principal, parent contact, counseling programs, and/or a variety of other consequences including:

Homeroom

All students are assigned to a homeroom, and they report to that space for 5 minutes each day. During homeroom, teachers distribute any materials or mail sent to students, and take attendance. Students listen to the morning announcements, which include meeting dates/times of co-currcilular activities. Students should remain in their assigned homeroom spaces throughout these five minutes each day.

In addition to the Interscholastic Sports Program, intramural sports are offered from 7:30 to 8:07 a.m. Monday through Friday. Entrance is through the main entrance doors only.

Lockers

Each student is assigned a hall locker and each student must purchase a combination lock for the locker assigned.  ONLY COMBINATION LOCKS ARE PERMITTED.  Lockers with key locks will be removed and parents notified.  Lockers are the property of the Westfield Board of Education.  It is each student’s responsibility to keep lockers organized, clean and unmarked.  School administration reserves the right to search lockers as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.

Lunch Program

All students eat lunch in the cafeteria during a 40-minute lunch period which includes a study break / recess.  Students may bring lunch from home, purchase a full meal or purchase á la carte items.  The lunch period is a time when students can socialize with friends who might not be in classes with them.  Every student is expected to demonstrate common courtesy and good table manners.
