Early Dismissal & Emergency Closing During School Hours

Mother Nature does not always follow the school calendar.  As a reminder, please review our annual inclement weather procedures to familiarize yourself with the types of changes that may occur during an inclement weather event.

Please remember that all school districts make the best decision based on the information available at that time and many variables are considered when determining the status of the school day.  Decisions consider the preparedness of our schools and conditions of our roads, are rarely clear-cut, and often must be made with inconsistent weather reports that are changing up until the morning of a school day.

For Delayed Openings, we will strive to notify families and staff between 5:30 - 6:00 a.m. of a change to the school day.

For Early Dismissals, we will notify families and staff as soon as we are able, depending on the emergent nature of the circumstances.

If a severe storm or other emergency develops during school hours precipitating an early dismissal, parents/guardians of students will be automatically notified via email, voice message, and text message.  Notices also will be posted on the Westfield Public School District website and on the district's social media pages.  Please remember to notify your child's school with any updates/changes to your home phone, cell phone, or email address (used for messaging alert system).

For students in Pre-K through 3rd grade, if a parent of designated emergency contact person cannot be reached, the child will NOT be sent home.  Persons designated as emergency contacts must be able to arrive at school within 30 minutes or less.

Emergency School Closings

Regularly scheduled school days may be cancelled due to snow or other serious conditions involving danger to staff and students on the way to and from school.  Administration officials use clear judgment in determining closings and delayed openings, always with your child's safety as a priority.

Parents/guardians will be automatically notified of school closing information via email, voice message, and text message.  You do not need to register yourself for emergency alerts.  During the school year, it is important that you notify your child's school with any updates/changes to your home phone, cell phone, or email address (used for messaging alert system).

If no emergency closing announcement has been made, and if a parent feels weather conditions are too adverse, that parent may exercise his/her own judgment in sending his/her child to school.  An absence of this nature will be deemed excused if accompanied by a parent note, but considered chargeable to the student's attendance record.
