Social and Emotional Learning
at Sarah W. Gibbons Middle School
at Sarah W. Gibbons Middle School
One of the primary ways students engage in social and emotional learning (SEL) at Gibbons is by participation in thoughtfully designed lessons during allotted crew time that incorporate explicit instruction of SEL content and skills by their crew leader(s). These lessons make up a cohesive curriculum distributed sequentially across seventh and eighth grade.
Both seventh and eighth graders begin their year being welcomed to Crew and with an introduction to social and emotional learning. Seventh graders then embark on a journey learning and developing concepts and skills related to self-awareness and self-management. As eighth graders, their learning and skill development continues as they explore ideas related to social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
