UNC System schools award appropriate credit to undergraduates who have earned a 3 or higher on one or more AP exams. After achieving a qualified AP exam score, a student will be awarded specified credit hours associated with the course(s) aligned with the exam's subject content.
UNC System schools are not required to offer appropriate credit for every AP Exam offered by the College Board. But if a school does offer credit for a particular AP Exam, it must offer appropriate credit in compliance with the policy.
Institutional AP standards will be documented and updated each year in online and/or printed resources for potential undergraduates.
A school may petition to have its board of trustees approve an exception if it has compelling reasons why a score other than 3 must be required. The school must report any exceptions granted by its board of trustees, and the reasons and evidence for those exceptions, by July 1, 2019, and each year after.
