The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (P.L. 2010, c.122) requires that the week beginning with the first Monday in October of each year (October 2-6 in 2017) be designated as the Week of Respect in New Jersey. In recognition of the importance of social and emotional learning and character education, school districts, charter schools and renaissance school projects are required to observe the week by providing age-appropriate instruction focusing on preventing HIB.

Our school district makes a great effort to maximize the positive impact of the Week of Respect by providing programs and learning opportunities that are well beyond the requirements. While it would seem that discussions about harassment, intimidation, and bullying would be anything but enjoyable, the fact is that our students participated in a host of fun and educational activities like school unity days, visits from speakers, anti-bullying pledges, and student produced videos.

The Week of Respect is also tied into our district wide initiative, the implementation of the Anti-Defamation League program, No Place for Hate. The district is developing our own No Place for Hate website and it will be available for students and parents in November.

In addition, I am happy to report that the district completed a mandated self-assessment of our HIB programs at each school and this information was shared at our September 28th Board of Education meeting. Our results showed that overall, our district scored a 75.8 out of a possible 78 points and this is another year of progress when we compare to our performance in prior years. Anthony Wayne Middle School Kicks off Week of Respect with a Motivational Speaker
Youth Motivational Speaker, Mike Marsteller, came to Anthony Wayne Middle School on Tuesday, October 3rd as part of their Week of Respect Celebration. Mr. Marsteller spoke to students and staff about resilience, perseverance, and leadership as they relate to kindness and respect for all!

Theunis Dey Teacher Interviewed by Scholastic Book Clubs
In September, Mrs. Melissa Stein-Ortiz, a third grade teacher at Theunis Dey, collaborated with Scholastic Book Clubs to facilitate an interactive read-aloud exercise that involved reading the book, The Little Ships by Louise Borden. This book is a narrative lyrical picture book about the historic evacuation of British soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940. Mrs. Stein-Ortiz used a graphic organizer for students to “stop and jot” information from the story. Then, students used their recorded information to create a “newspaper cover story” for this historic event. Scholastic Book Clubs sent a camera crew to Theunis Dey to interview Mrs. Stein-Ortiz about this project.

Board of Education Holds Retreat and Adopts Goals
At the September 28, 2017 regular meeting of the Wayne Township Board of Education, a set of four ambitious goals were unanimously adopted to guide the work of trustees for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond. The goals were developed during a successful retreat held on September 12, 2017. The goals involve a variety of activities including strategic planning, enhancing board efficiency through technology, evaluating the format currently used for Board meetings, and providing additional support to new Board members.
