Teen Mental Health First Aid
The Wayne Valley School Counseling Department has been implementing a Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) program for the class of 2023 over the course of the past several weeks. Counselors Mr. Paul, Mrs. Montana, and Mr. Imperatore, have been visiting 11th grade health classrooms to deliver lessons from the program since the beginning of March.
In these lessons, students learn how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health challenges and substance use among their peers. The training is designed to empower students to have supportive conversations with their friends while also getting help from trusted adults when appropriate.
The training and curriculum for this program are funded by a $20,000 grant from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. The first several weeks of this programming have been a great success.
One of our students spoke about how he feels about the program. “This class shows us what to look at and how to help someone suffering from mental health…Teaching students how someone can be suffering from mental health challenges allows for students to contact faculty to help a fellow student from danger. This class made me aware that people around me can be struggling mentally and how to get them help before it's too late”
WVHS's School Counseling Department is excited to be bringing this program to Wayne Valley. They cannot stress enough how important it is for our students to have an understanding of mental health warning signs and how to support a peer or seek help themselves.
