Pines Lake Elementary School's Core Word Communication Station

Pines Lake Elementary school is the first school in Wayne to install communication boards on its playgrounds. Developed by one of the Speech/Language Specialists at Pines Lake, Catherine Fredericks, these boards are designed to enable students and staff to interact in a fun way with students who are not yet able to effectively interact verbally with their peers. The presence of these boards increases awareness of the value of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) while participating in a naturalistic environment.

The first such customized playground board was installed in April at the Wayne Handicapped Accessible Playground on Greenrale Avenue. Developed by Mrs. Fredericks, the “Communication Station” was the first customized playground board in the state of New Jersey. Wayne Township continues to be at the forefront of providing AAC opportunities throughout the community.

Harnessing Human Energy Contest at Schyuler Colfax Middle School

Schuyler Colfax Middle School 8th grade science teachers, Mrs. McNamara, Mrs. Schneider, Mrs. Franks, and Mrs. Molk; paraprofessionals, Mrs. Unger and Mrs. Kasper, as well as, SRO Officer Ferray guided SCMS students through a "Harnessing Human Energy Contest".

The students were challenged to take on the role of mechanical engineers to design a tool that could collect energy from the human body. The next part of their task was to transfer that energy into a battery that could charge an electrical device needed by rescue workers. The energy system needed to be appropriately labeled, described and supported by scientific articles. It was then presented to their classes. The final posters were displayed on the walls in the school.

Officer Dennis Ferray, SCMS's SRO, helped introduce the project to the students and reached out to first responders to help choose the best invention. It was great for the students to be able to relate what they were learning in school to real life.

There was a tie for runner-up with "Light Boots", by Eva Robles, Hiep Do, & Aydin Zunic and "Heat Band", by Ally Lesser, Emme Goodstadt, & Wilson Stansfield.
