Dear Parents, Students, and Residents,
On May 3rd, the Board of Education adopted a final budget for the 2018-2019 school year. School budgets typically include thousands of pages with countless numbers that few residents fully understand. This budget summary is being presented to the community in order to increase understanding of the budget, and to educate residents about how their hard earned tax dollars are being invested to support quality education programs. To meet a vision for a holistic, dynamic, and creative school environment, Randall Carter Elementary applied for, and has been selected, to receive a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Arts Integration Grant for the third year in a row. Based on the funding available through the grant, a team of Randall Carter teachers will attend an intensive three-day art integration institute at Princeton University from July 16-18. The arts integration project led to students of all learning styles, abilities, and interests being excited about hands on learning opportunities in all subjects. Although the training at Princeton University is an excellent starting point for this work, the project is successful because of the wonderful teachers who execute the project: Art teacher Kathryn Shumeyko, 5th grade teacher Laura Mazza, 4th grade teachers Ellen Tosi and Rosemarie DiPalma, and 1st grade teacher Lisa Drake.
A new 600 kw generator was recently installed at Wayne Valley High School and it is now operational. When in use, the generator produces enough emergency power to provide approximately 80% of the regular electrical service at Wayne Valley. The location of the generator is strategic because Wayne Valley is already used as a community base for emergencies due to its central location and proximity to other government facilities. Recently, the district was notified that FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) increased funding for the project to a total of $401,753 (67%) of the $598,000 total project cost. The original funding amount from FEMA for this project was $250,000.
The Wayne Township Public Schools would like to thank the Laurelwood Arboretum for their support. For the first time, a district-wide arts show was held at the Arboretum from May 6th through May 18th. Thank you to our friends at Laurelwood Arboretum for providing a beautiful setting to showcase the work of our student artists.

During Memorial Day Weekend, the Wayne Hills Patriot Programmers traveled to Barrington, RI for the 2018 American Computer Science League All-Star Contest. In total, 91 teams gathered from around the world, including magnet high schools, technical schools, and international teams from Croatia, Romania, and the Ukraine. The three person team of Eli Paul, Wilson Chen, and Sangjun Ko took second place overall in the Senior 3 division against the best competition that the world has to offer. The All-Star contest itself was a two part process: In the programming section, our team scored a perfect 40/40 - each program they wrote handled all test cases to perfection. Next, they fielded 12 challenging questions in 60 minutes. When the final scores were tallied, the team from Wayne Hills was called to the stage for second place overall in the highest level of computer science competition available to high school students. Congratulations Eli, Wilson, Sangjun, and special thank you to advisor Neil Ascione - we are all so very proud of you!
