George Washington Middle School participated in NJ Makers Day at the media center on March 15th and 16th. After winning a grant from PSE&G & NJ Makers Day, Media Specialist Tara Cooper Weiss created 8 stations with STEAM based activities including a cardboard construction challenge using MakeDo, which allows cardboard to be used as a building material. Other stations included CAD design for 3D printing, coding using Google CS First, circuits with LittleBits and MakeyMakey, origami, gardening to restore the habitat of the monarch butterfly, and repurposing books into art. Over 350 students visited the makerspace each day, allowing for more than 45 classes to spend time in the media center. Students can continue their STEAM exploration at the media center and teachers can incorporate any of the Makers Day activities into class projects.
When APT Elementary School's scheduled author's visit was postponed due to weather on Dr. Seuss's birthday, the APT staff pulled together to create a powerful Sneetches themed assembly to teach students about inclusivity, acceptance, and respect.
On March 13th, the Patriots Robotics Team 9921 was invited to Google’s corporate headquarters in New York City. During the “Day at Google”, team members demonstrated their robot to Google engineers and learned about Google’s own robotics program. After touring their corporate operations, team members discussed many of the new technology and STEM related projects at Google.
The day concluded with a look at the internship opportunities offered by Google for students who are part of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and other STEAM programs, which could lead to offers of full time employment at Google as one of their engineers.
Later that day, the students received a citation from the Township of Wayne and Mayor Vergano for their outstanding achievements in promoting the capabilities of robotics in our community.
Additionally, the team headed off to the University of Scranton to compete in the East Super-Regional Championship Tournament.
Congratulations to all of our Wayne Valley future chefs for another strong performance at the Twelfth Annual Student Culinary Competition at Wayne Valley High School. A special thanks to Sodexo Food Services for their sponsorship of the event.
In addition to showcasing our students, the competition “served” another great purpose. The Wayne Valley Student Culinary Competition raised $1,815.00 for the Agnes Hoerner/Ed Grobe scholarship for Consumer Sciences. There were over 250 parents and students in attendance who came out to see and taste the students' creations, as well as vote for their favorite food choice.
