For the 13th year in a row, the PE/Health Staff at Anthony Wayne Middle School participated in fundraising for the American Heart Association. Formerly Hoops for Heart, this is the second year where they used the Great RePlay, a throw back to good old fashioned backyard games. All 600+ Anthony Wayne students were active and had fun playing games like "Red Light, Green Light" and "Red Rover" during their PE/Health class on Thursday, February 15th. Thank you to AWMS's talented and hard working PE/Health staff for always teaching students about healthy and active living!
Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has encouraged students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.
Catherine Smith, Wayne Valley High School English teacher, attended the Dodge Poetry Festival several years ago where she was introduced to Poetry Out Loud. She then started the program of poetry lessons in her own classes for three years and soon other English teachers gathered interest and started the program as well. Wayne Valley High School then started the school wide contest with the English Department holding class contests. Each class sent their winner to the school finals. The winning student then went onto Regionals with the potential to go to States and Nationals and winning a $20,000 prize.
This year Wayne Valley had 31 classes participate with over 750 students entering in the contest and 31 students took the stage. Natalie Cattuna, a student in Alison Solomon's English 11 honors class won the Wayne Valley contest and moved onto Regionals. Natalie was 1 of the 10 finalists from Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties. Congratulations Natalie!
Since 2006, Schuyler-Colfax Middle School has raised $76,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Last year, SCMS set the goal high and even exceeded expectations to raise over $15,000. This year the goal has been set even higher - $25,000. In just two weeks, Schuyler has raised over $17,000. The mission is to find a cure for blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. To kickoff this year's drive, representatives from The Leukemia Lymphoma Society came to speak to students. Joining them was a special guest, magician Michael Turbo, a Wayne native who discussed his recent diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
