The New Jersey Department of Education recognizes the outstanding contributions of educators in a variety of ways. One program is the Governor’s Educator of the Year (GEOY) Program, which recognizes the hard work of outstanding teachers and educational services professionals.
The New Jersey Department of Education recognizes the outstanding contributions of educators in a variety of ways. One program is the Governor’s Educator of the Year (GEOY) Program, which recognizes the hard work of outstanding teachers and educational services professionals.
After school level nominations were received, each of the Wayne Township Public Schools convened a committee to select one teacher and one educational services professional under the program guidelines. In the coming months, each of the educators selected locally may move on for recognition at the county, and potentially as candidates for state educator of the year.

The Governor’s Educator of the Year program is designed to highlight educational innovation, student achievement, the rewards of teaching, and the important services outside the classroom environment that lead to student success. The celebratory program integrates the Teacher of the Year Program with the Governor’s Teacher/Educational Services Professional Recognition Program to continue to recognize our state’s best teachers and educational services professionals.

James Fallon No Place For Hate Activity
James Fallon No Place For Hate Activity

James Fallon Elementary School is once again working this year to become designated as a "No Place For Hate" school. One of the activities completed this year was participating in Jumpstart’s “Read For The Record” program. This year, all students read “Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away” by Meg Medina. This book is a celebration of lasting friendship, the power of connection, and encountering change. Class discussions on the book focused on how to choose friends, what makes a good friend, and how to stay connected to people who are important in your life (whether they move away or you cannot see them due to circumstances like a pandemic). Students were then asked to complete a venn diagram activity identifying the similarities and differences between the two friends and themselves. This activity helped to highlight that friends come in all shapes and sizes, but they also share things in common and that’s what makes them good friends.

The James Fallon PTO helped to organize a virtual authors' visit as a culminating event for this No Place For Hate activity. Meg Medina and R.J. Palacio, author of “Wonder”, both participated and all students watched the virtual event at the same time with their class. The two authors are childhood friends. They described what it was like growing up together in the same neighborhood. They detailed experiences that helped form the characters of their books, as well as, why the topics they wrote about were important to them. The authors shared stories of experiences they had together and described how their friendship stood the test of time. R.J. Palacio spoke about the importance of her book's message and themes of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. The authors reinforced the central message that friends can be very different, but their common experiences and interests are what makes them good friends. All of the proceeds from the event went to myFace, the non-profit organization dedicated to changing the faces, and transforming the lives, of children and adults with facial differences.

Mrs. Kane's Track 1A Language Arts 8th graders have decided to tackle students' mental health with a problem-based learning project. Script Writers, Ad/Social Media team, Web Designers, Slides Creators, Video Game Coders, and Community Outreach Coordinators are all working towards individualized goals to ultimately put together resources for 6th graders to help guide them toward positivity, perseverance, and contentment.

This will be the third year of student led PBL presentations for the 6th graders that have been designed by Mrs. Kane's class of 8th graders. Last year's was an Anti-Vaping presentation and website complete with embedded Scratch games on each page.

In the upcoming weeks leading up to the May presentation, students will be updating the project's Instagram page @ aw.mentalhealth and sharing the final campaign resources during May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Wayne Special Parents Association (WSPA) will be holding a workshop on Monday, March 1st at 7:00 p.m. to help parents support their child during virtual learning. Two of our district's child study team members will be leading the workshop.

Registration will take place through each elementary school throughout the month of February. Only a parent or guardian may enroll the child.

Please go to the district website to FAMILY LINKS > REGISTRATION (or CLICK HERE) between February 1st and February 19, 2021, to complete the online registration, which is the first part of the registration process. Your school secretary will contact you to complete the next portion of the process once the online portion has been submitted and required documentation has been uploaded. Please have all required documentation ready prior to completing the online form.
