Canvas Term Changes & New Courses:
With the start of a new semester, increased requests to copy or import course content, and the April 24, 2026 deadline for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and ADA compliance approaching, we are sharing a refresher on required Canvas expectations.
If you would like to chat through any of these topics or anything else that we might be able to support with, please feel free to reach out to Amanda (6-8) or Erica (9-12).
We love supporting you in classrooms, trying out new ideas, being an extra set of hands, problem-solving with you, or exploring different ideas you might have for your classes together! The possibilities are endless with our collaboration. 🎉
We’re excited to share that our district has launched ChatGPT for Teachers, a secure, managed version of ChatGPT designed specifically for education. As Dr. Buck previously shared, teachers are not required to use AI; however, when used intentionally, it can support efficiency, creativity, and problem-solving. While AI use is optional, the rollout steps outlined below are required.
ChatGPT for Teachers provides:
Enhanced privacy and security protections
Higher message limits
Early access to new features
Safe collaboration within our district environment
You will receive an email from Vector Training, K-12 Edition Online Training when your required training is available. Please complete the following required steps in Vector by March 13:
Watch the Online Orientation Training video
Read and sign the required Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
Complete the AI Usage and Impact survey
Once you have completed the required steps, please note that access to ChatGPT for Teachers is not instantaneous. Please allow up to five business days, as the user list is updated weekly based on completed Vector requirements.
Once activated, there are two ways to gain access:
If you do not already have a Waukee Schools ChatGPT account, you will receive an email from OpenAI prompting you to create one. This may be in your Graymail.
If you already have an account using your Waukee Schools email address, your account will be automatically updated.
You’ll know your access is active when you see the Waukee CSD logo and your name in the lower-left corner of your ChatGPT for Teachers screen (see example below). At that point, you can start prompting and exploring ChatGPT for Teachers.
Additionally, this Waukee CSD Teacher Digital Resource Guide is a tool to help support your learning with ChatGPT for Teachers.
We’re excited to bring this tool to you and look forward to seeing how ChatGPT for Teachers supports teaching, learning, and day-to-day efficiency across our district.
This Accessibility Features Overview resource is designed to help educators explore the full range of built-in accessibility features available on iPad, with a focus on what’s new and improved in iPadOS 26. The guide organizes Apple’s accessibility tools by their five categories, Vision, Physical & Motor, Hearing, Speech, and General. Making it easy for teachers to understand what each feature does and how it can support learners more effectively.

Key reminders:
All Canvas web content must be fully accessible. This includes, but is not limited to:
Using proper heading structure on pages
Writing meaningful link text (avoid "click here")
Adding alt text for images
Providing captions for videos and transcripts for audio
Using tables only for data, not for layout
Ensuring sufficient color contrast
Slides 15–22 of the presentation review the 7 Pillars of Accessibility that are required in every course.
Additionally, each Canvas page includes an Accessibility Checker. This tool can be used to review the accessibility of content before pages are published.
Do not import an entire Canvas course. Importing a full course overrides required district templates and settings and may impact:
Course settings and term dates
Navigation structure
Files and file organization
Accessibility settings and existing errors
Other required configurations
Instead, use the “Copy To” feature to copy individual items such as modules, pages, assignments, or discussions. Directions for this process are located on Slide 6 of the presentation.
Using “Copy To” preserves required templates, settings, and accessibility standards while allowing content to be reused.
Module Organization has replaced Week at a Glance. All modules must progress in calendar order, with newer content appearing last.
Delete any template modules that are not being used in your course.
Term 2 or Semester 1 Canvas courses will become view only for both staff and students. The dates for this change vary by grade band. Please note when this change occurs for your courses.
Grades 6–9: January 23, 2026
Grades 10–12: February 6, 2026
Term 3 or Semester 2 courses may be published at any time. Courses will become available to students on the first day of the grading period, January 20.
