Canvas Course Rostering:
PowerSchool automatically populates your courses, students, sections, etc. for the academic year. Once a term/semester ends and the course has closed, the courses go to a read-only state.
Waukee CSD Canvas Access:
When accessing the district's Canvas courses please use the URL: https://waukee.instructure.com/.
Our 6-12 Canvas courses have a new and improved template for this academic year! To ensure the preservation of this template, we kindly request that you refrain from copying full courses from previous years. Instead, we recommend copying individual modules and course content, which can be easily accomplished by following the simple steps outlined below.
Import Specific Content into New Canvas Courses
In your new Canvas course, click Import Existing Content on the course navigation buttons.
In the drop-down menu, choose Copy a Canvas Course.
Search for the previous course you would like to copy items from. Start by typing the course name to populate the courses.
Next, in the Content section, choose Select Specific Content.
Within the Options section, click Adjust Events & Due Dates & choose Remove Dates in the adjustments option.
You can manually adjust dates during the duration of the course.
Click Import
Once the page refreshes, choose Select Content on the right.
Do not choose Course Settings.
Choose the content you would like to transfer over and click Select Content.
Note: When you are choosing the modules and other specific content you want to copy over, you will want to make sure you also are adding the assignments, pages, quizzes, etc. that align with the module.
The import status will start automatically and say completed when it has finished.
Make sure to unpublish any modules, pages, and/or assignments that you do not want students to view at the start of the semester!
Check out the Canvas Community for more detailed directions here for this process.
Let’s make sure everything in your new semester/term course is working!
Click the glasses in the top right-hand corner of your screen to access student view.
Cross-Listing Courses in Canvas
Cross-listing is when students in the same Waukee class are not in the same course in Canvas. (This does not apply to all courses) For example, if you have students in Algebra 2 at two separate buildings and want them in the same Canvas Course.

How to Cross-List a Canvas Course
Connect with us if you would like help doing this step.
If you have noticed students can still see your previous semester or term's courses even though they should be closed, check the course participation settings!
By default, the participation setting for the 6-12 WCSD Building Templates is Term. When copying a previous course if Settings is checked it will override current settings. To change this follow these simple steps.
→ Login to Waukee's Canvas Instructure
→ Open Current Courses
→ Click Settings on the side navigation
→ Scroll Down to Participation
→ Choose Term if it is not currently selected
FYI: The dates align with term and semester dates for 2024-2025. They also include a bit of a "buffer" to accommodate for incomplete grades and late work.
💡Quick Idea
On your Dashboard, if a course in All Courses is "starred" it will show up on your Dashboard. You can "unstar" courses to not have them show on your Dashboard.

As we wrap up the end of the year, you will not need to do anything with your Canvas courses that were generated by PowerSchool. Active courses will go to a read-only state after the term closes.
If you created a Manually-Created Course, you will need to change the end date past July 1, if you do not want it to go to read-only status. You will continue to have access to previous courses.

Importing new content into next year's courses. It is best practice to filter through what content you copy over from course to course to avoid outdated material or duplicates.
Modules Organization
Here is an example of two different ways to organize your content.
(Remember ALL items must be found in your Modules so assignments, quizzes, etc. aren't lost).
