JCQ Update: Summer 2023 contingency days

The awarding bodies have collectively agreed on a contingency day for several years now, which is always scheduled at the end of the GCSE, GCE AS and A-level exam timetables.

The contingency day is in the event of a national or significant local disruption to exams in the United Kingdom, being part of the awarding bodies’ standard contingency planning for exams.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, further resilience was needed within the exam timetables. A single contingency day was not felt to be sufficient if a national event or incident had a significant effect on the exam timetable. For example, summer exams could be affected by extremely high temperatures.

For the June 2023 exams, the awarding bodies have therefore introduced two additional half-day contingency sessions. These are on Thursday 8 June 2023 and Thursday 15 June 2023. The standard contingency day remains at the end of the timetable being scheduled on Wednesday 28 June 2023.

Parents should consider the contingency day of Wednesday 28 June 2023 when making their plans for the summer. Candidates should be encouraged to remain available until Wednesday 28 June 2023 should examinations need to be rescheduled.

KS4

Key Stage 4 and 16 to 18 validated performance measures were published by the Secretary of State for the 2021 to 2022 academic year in February 2023. This data was based on tests, exams and assessments from the 2021 to 2022 academic year. Given the uneven impact of the pandemic on school and college performance data, the government has said direct comparisons between the performance data for one school or college and another, or to data from previous years should not and can not be made accurately.

KS5

Advanced level qualifications (level 3)

"Due to the way that grades were awarded during the COVID-19 pandemic, qualification results achieved between January 2020 and August 2021, by students included in this year’s measures, are not included in the calculations. This may have had an impact on the results for this school or college, and we recommend that comparisons are not made with data from previous years, or directly with other providers. Comparisons to the local and national average should be made with caution.

Progress (value-added) measures were not produced at 16-18 this year as grades achieved between January 2020 and August 2021 would be required.  16-18 progress measures will return from 2023/24.
