You want students to prepare well for lectures and you want assignments to be handed in on time. In return you should set a good example and publish your Canvas course in time.
There are always students who check the course in advance, so that they know what is expected of them before the first lecture starts. Make sure these students are actually able to do so. In addition, it is often the case that you ask students to prepare for the first lecture. Students should be given enough time to do this.
For these reasons, we recommend that you publish your Canvas course at least 1 week before the first lecture starts. Similarly, working students who only have time to study at a certain time in the week will also have the time to prepare themselves. The best thing is if the Canvas course is already complete by then, but the least that should be uploaded is the syllabus.
Furthermore, we often see that teachers have finished their Canvas course, but forget to publish it. There are 2 steps you need to take to make a course visible to students:
All separate parts of your Canvas course need to be published. Check if you have done this for everything:
2. The second step is to publish the course as a whole. This can only be done on the Homepage (see image below).
