Strengths and Areas for Improvement

I think one of the strongest parts in my pop-up book was the 3D effect. I think the pop-up elements work very well because they make the story more interactive and interesting to look at. I also like the my story line and drawings I used because they match my theme of the book and make it more visually appealing. Overall, I think my artwork looks genuinely good because it is creative, neat, and shows effort on design and process. However, there are still some place to improve like some of the folds are difficult to make evenly, so some pop-up ssections can not be open smoothly. If I could change something, I will color my book and spend more time on planning the measurement and practice more on the folding techniques teacher taught us. Additionally, I would also add more background details to make the page feel fuller and more immersive.

Ideas That Changed Because of My New Understanding of Art

Before this semester, I used to think that art was like 90% about drawing something that looks realistic. But after studying in this class, I learned that art is not just drawing, it can also be about creativity, storytelling, emotions, and communication. A pop-up book showed me that art can be combining all design, engineering, and imagination at the same work. My ideas about art changed because I realized that there is not only one “correct” way to make art. Different artists use different styles and materials to express their ideas, and what they're trying to share. I also learned that mistakes and experimentation are part of the creative process, which is the ugly stage, not something to avoid completely.

Work Ethics, Attitudes, and Behaviors That Helped My Artwork

The habits that helped me success in this assignment were patience, and careful plans, and also the most important trait, not giving up when something did not work at the first time. My attitude affected my creation because during the working time, I stayed pretty open on finding new ideas and also improving my work. When I became frustrated with cutting mistake, I always took short breaks and tried again more carefully. My behavior was also very important because I stayed focused during the class, and used my time very wisely. I overcame challenges by testing different ways to show my stories and adjust my folds when some part is not working as I expect.

Making Good Use of the “Ugly Stage”

The ugly stage is the part where my artwork looks bad and unfinished. I think this stage is crucially important because it helps me to see what is needed to be fix before my final product. During my project, some pages looked bited by dog and confusing at first, but I used this stage to improve my cutting outline, redraw part, and reorganize the layout. This stage taught me that good artwork does not randomly appear in the perfect moment immediately, improvement came from revising and solving problems step by steps.

Artists as Problem Solvers

Artists are considered problem solvers because they constatly make decision about design, structure, color, also meaning of their work. In my pop-up book, the hardest decision is that how to make the pop-up pieces stand up properly while still allow the book to close. I used problem solving skills by testing different folds angles and I also adjust the size of the paper until it worked. I think art is a form of problem solving because artist must find ways to creatively express their ideas, and overcome technical challenges and also communicate with audience.

The Importance of Art

I believed that art can provide a unique form of knowledge about our experience that non of logics, sciences, and languages can express. Art can show a lot of emotions, imagination, memories, and personal experiences in a powerful strong and visual way. I think art is as important as other subject. Subjects like science and math may help us understand the world logically, but art help us understand it emotionally, like understanding people, emotions, and creative. Art means very much in my life because it allow me to express my ideas and also relax when I'm creating something meaningful. I can make art part of my  life by continuing to draw, continuing doodle on my notebook, design and create art like my pop-up book. I can also use creativity in other subject and in my daily activities, not only art class.

Final Reflection

This project really helped me a lot and taught me that art is more than making something look nice. It involves creativity, patient, problem-solving, and also the most important element, " Self Expression." I am proud and gloriously that my pop-up book shows my effort and growth as a small artist in this semester.
