This week we are continuing our work on shadows. I hope you had fun last week creating your own shadow art. Click on the PowerPoint to the left and look through the first few slides to help you understand what shadows are a little better and how they are created. The PowerPoint will then talk a bout an investigation. You can skip that part because I will be putting our own investigation below!
Our investigation!
You will need a torch (you could use the torch function on a phone if you don't have one.)
I would like you to experiment with making shadows. (The room will need to be dark for this to work best.) use different opaque objects and hold them up to the light to create shadows. Move your opaque objects closer to and then further away from the light source. What do you notice? Write down what you find out in your work books.
Can you find a transparent or translucent object to test? Move them in front of the light source. Are the shadows different to the opaque object? what happens? Record your findings in your work book.
Shadows are created when light is blocked. We will learn more about shadows next week but for now its time to get creative. Can you create some shadow artwork like you can see in the picture to the left? Place a toy or object in front of a sunny window or out in your garden and place a piece of paper where the shadow falls. Draw around the shadow to create your picture.
Look through the power point to the left to find out all about sun safety. There is an experiment part way through that you are welcome to set up but if you don't have the materials don't worry. You can skip that part out!
Complete the activity at the end of the power point. (I have not posted the worksheet as a blank piece of paper will work just as well.)
The power pint to the left will give you some information to get started.
Just use the first few slides to help you understand the topic.
It will continue to activities for the classroom but ignore those and look below for some home learning activities.
Secret Mirror Messages.
Step 1. Write a message down on a piece of paper.
Step 2. Hold the piece of paper up to the mirror. (The letters will appear backwards.)
Step 3. Copy down the backwards message on another piece of paper.
Step 4. You now have a secret message! Whoever you give the message to will need a mirror to read it.
Step 5. Give the message to someone and tell them to hold it up to the mirror to read it.
Walking with a mirror
*Ask permission before trying this activity! *
Step 1: Create a long wiggly line on the ground with string or paper or perhaps you could draw in chalk outside. (however you mark the line is fine, just get permission and don't make a mess!)
Step 2: Find a small hand held mirror.
Step 3. stand at one end of the line and hold the mirror above your head and look into it. You should be able to see your feet and the line on the floor.
Step 4. Try to walk along the line whilst only looking in the mirror. Be very careful when you do this and take it slowly. It's best to do this where the ground is soft and with someone else to help you.
This Power point is all about reflective surfaces. There is a task in it to create a reflection checker. Try and make one at home if you can.
If not try just using a torch (or the torch on a phone) to check if things around your home are reflective
. You could create a table of things that reflected the light and things that didn't.
There are worksheets mentioned on the power point but I haven't uploaded these as I think this would be a lovely physical activity and if you do wish to record your findings this is a great opportunity to practice drawing a table.
This is a power point all about light and dark. Use this to help you understand the worksheets to the right. (There are some activities that match but there is also an activity that uses feely bags, you can ignore that activity!)
This is the first worksheet mentioned in the power point. Use it to write down everything you already know about light and dark.
Here are the sorting cards mentioned in the power point. Which of these so you think is a source of light?
This is the last activity sheet. Can you fill in the gaps using the words at the bottom of the page. (There are 3 versions. You only need to do 1.)
