A Haiku is a traditional Japanese poetry style.
It is a short poem with 3 lines.
Each line must have a certain number of syllables.
line 1: 5 syllables
line 2: 7 syllables
line 3: 5 syllables
Look at the poster to the left for some examples.
To fins out more about syllables look below!
We have looked at syllables in school before (remember we clapped the syllables of our name and other words.)
The power point to the left should help you to remember.
A Haiku is normally about nature, so why not start by looking our fo your window or going onto the garden. You could even think up some ideas on your daily walk.
Think about the things you can see, hear and feel.
Then try to write a 3 line poem about it.
It might be tricky to get the amount of syllables correct first time. You might want to try and just write your ideas down firs then change the words later so you hsve the right amount of syllables.
Remember the pattern is 5-7-5
Have a go at writing a few haikus this week and remember, even though it is traditional, they don't have to be about nature. You could write a Haiku about anything you like.
You could write a Haiku about unicorns, football, minecraft, teddy bears, flying a kite, swimming! Anything at all!
Once you've written your Haiku is might be nice to decorate it by drawing pictures to match the subject.
Let your imagination run wild and have a go! If you want to, you can send us your finished Haiku poems to stjoseph@sjnewman.co.uk
