Es el momento del Mediterráneo: una reflexión de Be Blue en el Día de los Océanos.

It's time for the Mediterranean: a reflection of Be Blue on the Day of the Oceans.

Con la publicación de su enciclopedia en español Mundo submarino (1979), el célebre oceanógrafo Jacques Cousteau, junto al naturalista Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, alarmaba al mundo sobre la grave situación que enfrentaba el mar Mediterráneo. 

With the publication of his encyclopedia in Spanish Mundo submarino (Underwater World) (1979), the famous oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, together with the naturalist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, alarmed the world about the serious situation facing the Mediterranean Sea. 

Hoy, esas advertencias resuenan más que nunca, y resulta crucial mirar atrás para evaluar nuestras acciones y comprender la urgencia del momento.

Today, those warnings resonate more than ever, and it is crucial to look back to assess our actions and understand the urgency of the moment.

El Mediterráneo debe dejar de nuestro basurero. Aunque desde fuera se vea simplemente como una gran masa de agua, nada más lejos de la realidad: en sus profundidades hay hábitats que albergan multitud de especies, como los corales o la posidonia, que deben ser protegidos para devolverle a esta maravilla natural la virtud de ser un vibrante caleidoscopio de vida marina. La buena noticia es que, afortunadamente, todavía estamos a tiempo. 

The Mediterranean must stop be our garbage dump. Although from the outside it looks simply like a large body of water, nothing is further from reality: in its depths there are habitats that host a multitude of species, such as corals or posidonia, which must be protected to restore to this natural wonder the virtue of being a vibrant kaleidoscope of marine life. The good news is that, fortunately, there is still time.

Para tener éxito en esta misión debemos no solo cambiar la mentalidad, sino también actuar conjuntamente con el mismo objetivo. Y es que es sabido que el preocupante estado actual de los mares y océanos del planeta tiene mucho que ver con la actividad humana: la contaminación, la sobrepesca y el cambio climático son los principales factores que han conducido al Mediterráneo al borde del colapso. 

To succeed in this mission we must not only change the mindset, but also act together with the same goal. It is well known that the current worrying state of the planet's seas and oceans has a lot to do with human activity: pollution, overfishing and climate change are the main factors that have driven the Mediterranean to the brink of collapse.
