My main specific goal for this project was to write and compose a whole song in order to record it for my first 'Solo EP'.This goal was set initially to start me on the right path to becoming a proffesional musician/songwriter, which consists of writing my own material to record and release. The improvement of my skill certainly developed each week as you can see in my blog posts as all the elements of the song came together piece by piece. One way I think my songwriting skill improved is because I kept going with it and I was determined to finish it, In the past I have given up on some ideas and have never tried to pursue them after so this method has certainly helped. In the first week I started writing a whole different song to 'Stick With It', It started off promising but I got to a bit of a dead end with it in the following attempt to take the song further. This was when I had the simple idea of the chords for 'Stick With it' and I could definitely see it going somewhere so I stuck with it, if you'll pardon the pun. By documenting my progress each week I was really driven to keep up the productivity so I'd be able to look back after the song was completed and then see how it all came together. I can happily say I've now done that and have been able to scan back through my blogs and see how I wrote a song that I'm proud of from scratch.
Another skill I can develop to help me achieve my dream job would be to continue with learning guitar scales. This would help me cover a range of elements in music performance, for example playing solo's and riffs. I can develop this skill by dedicating time to it and documenting progress just like I have done with my songwriting goal in this portfolio.
I have learned two guitar scales in this project, the minor pentatonic and major pentatonic scale. I didn't pursue and document these targets as I mainly focused on my songwriting target over the last month or so. However I'm pleased I put some time into learning them as It was something I've never tried before and I will challenge myself to learn more in the near future. I am glad I got this chance to try new skills and make a website for them as it has given me a purpose to learn these elements of music I might not have attempted.
This week I did some research on what record labels look for in a songwriter in order for them to take someone like me on board within the company. Most of them are looking for productivity, creatitivty, discipline and musical talent. By reading this I believe that I'm certainly on the right path to hopefully achieve this target of becoming a professional songwriter. The songwriting goal I've been working towards will certainly help prepare me and put me in the right direction in going forward to achieve the proffesional musician/songwriter status. I intend to take this way of songwriting into every project, collaboration and every session I try and write a song. This way of writing consists of trying to be productive with every attempt/session in writing a particular song. This could be one attempt coming up with the chords, humming a melody which can then turn into words or some dummy lyrics which can then be reworked at a later date.
I'm very happy with the song and I look forward to recording it on Logic Pro X. I hope you enjoyed the series of blog posts and I look forward to releasing my debut EP.
