Two strains of dogs existed in World of Beasts. Traditional four-legged variants can be found across all three continents, while northern megafauna dogs have 6 legs - these 6 legged variants always have Halios or Halian in front of their name.
Domesticated dogs are an integral part of life in the World of Beasts. Dogs are mostly kept for work, though companionship is certainly an added bonus. Three size classes exist: Miniature (sized for Deoges to safely handle), Common (around the sizes of today's dogs), and Mammoth (sized for Daiten and Mythicals). Some breeds may come in multiple size classes. Real-life dog breeds exist as well (like Duffy and Hemlock) but are much rarer than those listed on this page. Breeds are organized by purpose, then size class.
Purposes include:
Herding: Herding class dogs are used to drive livestock from place to place or gather them up. They small, quick, and agile physically, and mentally are high-energy and intelligent.
Farmhand: While these dogs are most commonly found on farms, they're incredibly versatile and are used for a number of purposes, such as herding, guarding, or search-and-rescue. They tend to be larger in size than their herding peers, easily trainable, loyal, and energetic.
Personal Protection: These dogs are typically large and intimidating in build, easily trainable but with territorial tendencies. They're bred to act on their owner's command to guard people, property, and possessions.
Livestock Guardian: Among the very largest of dogs, these breeds are built to defend both in personality and in physical strength. They're independent and are driven to guard herds of animals such as sheep and goats that are prone to being picked off by predators.
Hunters: These dogs were bred to get paws-on with their prey, aiding their masters in taking down large and heavy animals, as well as providing protection against predators where needed. They are strong dogs with a drive to please and also a drive to catch prey
Shotdogs: These dogs play a variety of roles for hunting smaller species, and can be broken down into the subgroups of spaniels and pointers. Spaniels are bred to flush game birds from their nests to be shot down, while pointers search by sight and sound to direct their handlers toward prey. These are loyal and energetic dogs.
Scenthounds: These dogs are bred to track down just about anything by scent; missing persons, game animals, certain plants, and more. They often work in packs but may work alone.
Sighthounds: Dogs with lean builds and deep chests, these are sprinters who track small prey by sight and chase it down. They're most common in plains and desert areas where there's nothing to obstruct their view.
Draft: Bulky builds and high stamina characterize these breeds. They're used to haul sleds and carts where larger animals would not work, whether due to time or feeding constraints or the size of the handler; Deoge most often utilize these dogs, as do those living in cold climates where the grass and hay to feed herbivorous species isn't available.
Waterdogs: These are dogs meant to perform any sort of work around water. They may be aids to fisherman or hunters of waterfowl, and retrieve game or supplies or help haul rowboats to shore. They also excel in water rescue missions.
Terriers: Small, smart, and energetic, these dogs serve as pest control. They have a high prey drive and will chase down and kill critters that spread disease, such as mice and rats and pigeons.
Others: Can include small watchdogs, carriage dogs, and companion breeds.
The World of Beasts-specific breeds are not found among Anthropomorphs, but real-life dog breeds may be.
