Bat-Backed: NightWings that have a furry layer that goes down their spine instead of the studded scales, usually coming in black or brown colors.
Owl-Throat: A NightWing's head can swivel all the way around once like that of an owl's. However, it removes the NightWing's ability to breathe smoke/fire in response.
Mineralscales: A NightWing has a few growths on solid muscles consisting of various minerals, although it doesn't grow to the levels of an Earthscales. Instead it's crushed glittering layers over the scales and can easily be broken off and injure the carrier.
Glowscales: When under direct moonlight, the silver star-like scales on a NightWing will emit a faint glow. This happens when they are exposed to large amounts of cold and moonlight as an egg.
Starcaller: NightWings with this ability can shift their star-like scales to have the appearance of various constellations.
Starsight: A mutation where the affected dragon has very poor vision and sees what looks like galaxies in their peripheral vision. If you look into an affected dragon's eyes you can see stars and constellations in their irises.
Moon Sickness: This happens when the affected dragon's egg has been exposed to too much strong moonlight. This seems to tamper with the affected dragon's senses of direction, memory, time, emotions, and/or morals. While not fatal on its own, an affected dragon can get killed from their skewed senses through flight accidents or other incidents. Affected dragons have glassy pale blue or silver eyes, speak in an odd manner, and are strangely drawn to the moon and stars.
Cinderthroat: A relatively common mutation where the affected dragon cannot breathe fire, but rather smoke and embers. This has no serious side effects and is often characterized by smokey orange eyes or dull scales with an orange sheen. A number of modern/canon NightWings have this but is never used due to its association with the volcano.
Venomtounge: Another rather common mutation where the affected dragon's saliva is mildly venomous. This weak venom can kill prey over the course of days, much like a komodo dragon! Bites on other dragons are harmless unless they enter the bloodstream but typically only result in infection or a rash. It's speculated this mutation developed when the NightWing population dwindled and mixed with RainWings at some point in the past.
Storm-Mind Reading/Future Sight: In Darkstalker’s book, Arctic asked Foeslayer if an oncoming storm would disturb their “superstitions”, to which she responds “I’m not sure.” Storm reading is caused by a storm blocking the moons an egg hatches under. As a result, the affected dragonet will be able to only see near futures and have weaker mind reading. If the affected dragon tries to see far futures or tries to better their mind reading, they will be met with sounds of a storm and fogginess.
Starryeyes: NightWings with this mutation have star-shaped pupils. This can range from one star-shaped pupil, to eyes that mirror like the night sky, lacking a prominent pupil. Vision may or may not be affected by this mutation, depending on genetics; some may be blind, and some may have fantastic vision and/or improved nightvision. This is more likely to appear in NightWings whose egg never sees any light during incubation.
Sympathy Reader: Instead of mindreading, a NightWing will only pick up on the emotions and/or physical sensations in another dragon of any kind. It's a rare condition that usually doesn't end well. It will come from a malnourished egg that has hatched under three moons. (separate shop item)
Not compatible with Blood Moon, Cometborn, Enhanced Abilities, or Double Ability
Double Ability: A dragon born under two full moons, giving them the powers of mind-reading and prophecy (separate shop item)
Not compatible with Blood Moon, Enhanced Abilities, or Cometborn
Blood Moon Dragonet: A dragon born under a blood moon. Mind readers hatched underneath a blood moon can project their thoughts onto any dragon, while seers can see terrible events and natural disasters more clearly. (separate shop item)
Not compatible with Cometborn, Double Ability, or Enhanced Abilities
Sparklescales: Affected NightWings have very glittery, shiny scales that seem to glow in the dark slightly. They often have long talons, big wings and a long tail. Sparklescales dragons have beautiful, shining eyes that have a glow-in-the-dark property to them. (separate shop item)
Cometborn: Nightwings with the cometborn mutation hatch when a comet is visible in the sky. It usually results in having enhanced speed and strength. But other times they can control the tide. The rarest Comentborns, though, are the ones that can make Comets fall from the sky. (giveaway only)
Not compatible with Double Ability, Blood Moon, or Enhanced Abilities
Enhanced Abilities: Dragons born under three full moons, enhancing their prophecy and mind-reading abilities (giveaway only)
Not compatible with Double Ability, Blood Moon, or Cometborn
Galaxyscales: These NightWings have oddly colored scales (vibrant blues, purples, pinks, reds and sometimes pitch-black) with star-like scales scattered across their whole body, not just the wings. Galaxyscales dragons breathe a cold, misty, bright dust rather than fire. This mutation occurs when an egg is laid and hatched very high up and in direct contact with bright moonlight the whole incubation period, as well as when hatching. (giveaway item)
Firework (NightWing): In order for a NightWing to be born with this mutation, they have to hatch during a meteor shower. This mutation gives the afflicted NightWing firework-like markings, which can be lighter in color than the rest of their scales. (giveaway only)
