This picture of Gnat Hole School appears in Alan Watson's book Bygone Days of Whitehough & Bugsworth. It is of particular interest to me because in it is my grandmother and five of her thirteen siblings.

Below is the caption which is shown with it - my additional information in brackets. Pupils and teachers at the school in early 1900s (there is a piece about Gnat Hole School next to it)

Back row:- Miss Jackson; Ada Founting; Rose Hill; Lizzie Wilson; Bill Neal; E Hill; Lillie Barnes; 2 girls not known; Miss Pritchard; Miss Barnes.

2nd row:-Sally Stiles (b. 1896); John Barnes; Jack Stiles (b. 1898); Sam Hill; Harold Wilson; Harry Wilson holding Mary Wilson; boy not known; Joe Walker.

I think the boy, 2nd row from front, 4th in from right, blond hair, could be John (Jack) Winterbottom. Was born 1898 at Barren Clough. I know he went to Gnat Hole School. He always reckoned that he led a 'strike' at what he called Gnat Hole College ! (Must've been a number of years after this picture was taken, if true.)

FERNILEE AND TAXAL

Fernilee School 1920-21. teacher Fanny Horniblow was born in Salford Pryors, Warwickshire. In 1893, aged 9 years old, she was living at Tunstead Milton and by 1901 she was a teacher living at Horwich End. In 1911 she was an Assistant Teacher living at Horwich End. A lot of Whaley children must have been taught by her.

WHALEY BRIDGE

Left by Gnatalee on the 28th September 2013

I thinks picture is a little later than 1925 as I believe that the young lady sitting in the middle row, hands on lap, third from right is Eileen Oscroft who was born in 1920. She appears in some of the other Whaley school photos as a younger child. I would have thought this picture would be around 1934 ish.

Left by R. S-S on the 3rd October 2013

You could well be correct. Some of the photos I have in my collection were of schools and various groups of people. These were shown at 'film shows' to an invited few in the 1970's/80's and the organiser, if he did not know the date of the photo simply had a guess. Near enough would do was his theory.

Left by Margaret Schofield on the 18th December 2014

The girl in the middle row, second from the left wearng a dark dress with a lace collar is my dear late mother Mrs. Ethel Vernon nee Platt.

Left by Gnatalee on the 1st May 2019

The young girl behind the one on the front row in the checked dress (she is wearing a plain dress with white trim around the neckline) is Rene Brooks who was born in November 1919. Born in Whaley and emigrated to Canada in 1948.

Left by Wendy Milling (Rhodes) on the 16th February 2014

I think the boy on the top row, third from the left is my dad Les (Dennis) Rhodes. He was born 1920, so the photo must be around 1930

Left by Gnatalee on the 20th April 2014

I think the little blonde boy near the front, on the left, with jumper, stripey tie and arms folded, is my Dad Bill Jones. I believe that the little girl, 2nd row from the front in the pale dress, arms folded, is Eileen Oscroft (married Doug Haig).

Left by Marjorie Mourne (nee Hartle) on the 14th May 2015

This is an interesting comparison with photo no. 803 of 1952. Mrs Darby and Mr Wild have left.

Back row left is Mrs Edwards, next to her Mr Wild, 2nd from right is Mr Macareth. Front row next to Mr Hallam are Mrs Darby (left) and Miss Kirk. I think I have got that correct.

I don't recall who taught me in the 1st year year, but the sequence subsequently was I think Mrs Darby, Miss Kirk, Mrs Edwards and Mr Wild.

Mrs Edwards' class was held in the Methodist Church schoolroom and we crocodiled back and forth during the day. Mr Wild's class shared the hall back to back with Mr Macareth's
