I think this was the 1940's. The Soldier Dick was a Gartsides Brewery house. A sign at the corner of Station Road points to Bell's Brewery's Station Hotel. The phone box is the old K1 concrete style and the Co-op was still single fronted.

This is another black and white image from the History Society collection, digitally coloured. I can only make a guess at the colours of vehicles and houses although the tones of the original image do give some guide.

Furness Vale in colour from a black and white original. The newsagents shop was taken over by Smalleys in the early 1960's and the Soldier Dick became a Bass pub in 1967 so the photo was between those dates.

Another photograph coloured from a black and white original. I don't know the date but I would imagine it's the 1950s or early 60s.

Adrian Wilson took this photograph at Furness Brickyard in the late 1970's. This shows one of the 'beehive' kilns with the main building in the background. The person is believed to be Tommy Burton.

Furness Vale Co-op

Another fine photograph digitally coloured by David Easton. When he sent the photo in he also said:-

Red seems to be the correct colour although I don't know about the shade. I'm guessing that the date is before WWI because the name changed in 1913 to Whaley Bridge and Buxton Co-op although they may have been slow in changing the sign. The tall man on the left is Sam Shatwell and next to him Percy Hulme. I understand that they later opened a shop in Horwich End.
