INTRO TO ME

Hello! My name is Julie-Anne I am in my fourth semester in the Language Program at Dawson College. I am 20 years old, I speak English, French and currently learning Mandarin and Spanish. I personally enjoy watching anime, reading manga, romance/fantasy/mystery novels. I want to learn as many languages as possible so I can speak to even more people and learn about them. I have a diverse love for music, but my top 3 genres would be R&B, Korean pop, and musicals.

Topic ideas:

  • history of American sign language

  • different forms of American sign language

  • the impacts of polite speech in Japan

FINAL TOPIC IDEA

I have chosen my final topic to be the history of American sign language. I chose this one because I wanted to know how sign language has developed throughout the years. Where did ASL derive its source of information from and have the hand movements changed since its first appearance?

Emily Shaw examines the relationship between ASL and French sign language. As well, as to how the gestures came to be and what had an influence from a sociological and linguist viewpoint. She divides etymons into 6 broad categories; meaningful gestures to LSF, the material culture in the 18th and 19th century, the social customs, societal value to the LSF, and the initialized and methodical signs specific to LSF. I will be using her research results examples to explain the development of gestures from LSF to ASL.
