Introduction

Hi people!

My name is Ariane Fernandez. I'm 19 years old and I'm of Argentine origine. I've always been someone who likes to discover or learn new things, specially languages and history. From a young age, i've been curious about Asia and all the different culture. Also, something that have been in my life since a young age is Taekwondo. I did Taekwondo for 11 years and I am now a 2nd degree black belt. I'm not really comfortable putting a picture of me on the site, but I'm sharing with you this drawing of me that my friend did, that I think really represent me.

Topic ideas

For my topic ideas, I deside to choose topics that are related to my interests and what I would like to study at university. Here are some of my ideas :

  • The history of the Korean language or the Korean writing system

  • The evolution of the chinese characters

My final topic

How the korean writing system, hangeul, impacted the korean language, identity, culture, and society.

I chose this topic because of my interest in the korean language and culture. In my paper, I will focus on the how the new korean writing system called "hangeul" impacted the korean society, their identity, their culture, and their use of language.

Lee, Iksop and Ramsey, S. Robert. The Korean Language. E-book ed., SUNY Press, 2000. Dawson Library

Lee and Ramsey explore the Korean language on different level: The writing system, the phonology, the phrases structure, the history and more. The chapter that is going to be useful for my project is the "Korean Writing" one. In this chapter, they tell the history of the korean alphabet which is what my project is focus on.

Iksop Lee is a Professor of Korean language and linguistics at Seoul National University and a former director of the Korean National Lenguage Research Center. He wrote mutiple books on Korean language.

S. Robert Ramsey is a Professor of Est Asian Linguistics at the University od Maryland. He also wrote several books about the Korean language.

Thoughts and Ideas

While browsing the internet to learn more about the Korean writing system, I came across this video made by the National Hangeul Museum. This video explains a simple explanation to the creation of hangul and tells us how the characters were formed.

Kim, Jongmyung.“King Sejong’s Buddhist Faith and the Invention of the Korean Alphabet: A Historical Perspective.” Korea Journal, vol. 47, no. 3, Sept. 2007, pp. 134–59.

Kim explore the reationship between King Sejong's faith in Buddhism and his creation of the Korean alphabet. In his paper, he claims that King Sejong's faith as an impact on the way he created the Korean alphabet.

Jongmyung Kim is now Associate Professor in the Graduate School of korean Studies at the Academy of Korean Studies. He recieved is MA and PhD from UCLA with focus in both Buddhist studies and Korean studies. He published several work on the Korean language and Buddhism.

Kim's theory about the impact of King Sejong's Buddidt faith in the invention of Hangeul is useful because it sheds insight in the reason of the creation of the new writing system.

Thoughts and Ideas #2

I found this short video that explain who King Sejeong the Great was while doing some research and thaught about sharing it with you. I believe that knowing a little bit more about the man behind the creation of hangul would be better to understand hangul itself.

Yoon, Seon Tae. “The Creation of Idu.” Korea Journal, vol. 50, no. 2, 2010, pp. 97–123. Korea Open Access Journals, https://doi.org/10.25024/kj.2010.50.2.97.

Yoon explore how Idu was created by borrowing Chinese Characters with an analysis on the epigraph and "newly" found wooden tablets. In this paper, Yoon claims that Koreans from the mid-sixth century tried to use Chinese characters to transcribe Korean sounds.

Seon Tae Yoon is an assistant professor of the Department of History Education at Dongguk University, Seoul. He received his Ph.D. from Seoul National University in 2000. He currently serves as a member of the Korean Society for the Study of Wooden Documents. He also published two others article about the Sillas and the wooden tablets that were found.

Yoon's article about Idu is useful to understand the writing system that was used before the creation of hangul and how it could have contribute in some part to it's creation.

Corbett explores the creator of hangul, the creation of hangul, and the impact it had on the nation when it was introduce to society. Corbett claims that while it was not well recieved at first, hangul is now recognized as one of the best scientific writing system in the world, and it had benefited generations of Korean.

Heidi Corbett is a 3rd grade teacher at Yongsan International School in South Korea. She published an other blog on the same website linguistics and communication.

Corbett's blog about the impact of hangul on the nation will be useful to suport my argument about the benefits of the new writing system on the society and how it improved the pourcentage of literacy.

Tentative Thesis Statement & Topic Sentences

Thesis: The arrival of this new written system in the 15th century made a significative impact on the society and their culture.

Topic Sentence #1: With the invention of hangul, the commoners were able to become literate.

Topic Sentence #2: Hangul also helped Joseon (today Korea) gain more independence from China.

Topic Sentence #3: In today’s society, the Korean language and hangul helped their culture to be shared around the world.

Thesis Statement & Topic Sentences

Thesis: The arrival of this new writing system in Korea in the 15th century had a positive impact on the literacy and on the identity of the Korean nation.

Topic Sentence #1: With the invention of hangul, the commoners were able to become literate.

Topic Sentence #2: Hangul also helped Joseon (today Korea) gain more independence from China.

Topic Sentence #3: Hangul helped korea population being more educated.

The Diamond-Sutra Recitation Group explores the story of King Sejong the Great through the historical context, the acheivements and the invention of the Korean alphabet. In this book, the authors claim that King Sejong had a big impact on the history of Korea.

The book was edited by 6 person. Hyun Bok Lee, a professor Emeritus of the Phonetics & Linguistics Department at Seoul National University. He completed his doctoral degree in Linguistics at the University of London, and has served as Founder and Honorary President of the Phonetic Society of Korea, Vice President of the Korean Language Society, President of the Korean-English Speech Academy, Special Adviser to the English Phonetic Society of Japan, and the Permanent Council of the International Conference on Spoken Language Processing. Sang Woo Jeon, a historian of East Asian science. He received a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a master's degree in History from Seoul National University, and received his doctoral degree in science history from Kyoto University.
