Link was born as a simple shiny Buneary to a lovely couple of parents - a Lopunny and a Diggersby. His parents were part of an entire colony of rabbit-type Pokemon, including Lopunny, Diggersby, Plusle, Minun, and even a few Raboot. Link was never the healthiest of kits, but he got along well enough despite that. He spoke, but only rarely, quite shy at the time. He didn't get along particularly well with the other kits of the colony, and to this day isn't sure whether it was his pink fur or his poor health that caused their ire.
Link's favorite activity was exploring the regions around his home, areas which were filled with trees, valleys, and rivers. His parents were mostly okay with this exploration, but one thing they were clear about was ensuring he never went into the Haunted Woods. Link usually obeyed such instructions, but one day, when he was trying to get along with the other youngsters, things got a little out of hand and he ended up lost in the Haunted Woods. The others had placed a blindfold over his eyes and had sent him deep into the Woods. Link tried very hard to get out of the woods, but he was quite thoroughly lost.
Link managed to mostly survive, eating whatever berries he could find, but it wasn't much. His wandering through the Haunted Woods took him further and further away from his home, and unknown to him, he was being watched. One day when the tired child was resting, he was attacked by a Sableye looking to drain him of his life. He got several scars in the process, including the one across his throat, and did his best to fight off the creature, punching it uselessly with his soft Buneary paws. Just as the Sableye was ready to take the finishing blow, a cloud of Ghastly floated in like a fog, surrounding the two and pulling the Sableye away.
It may have been too late for Link if one of the Ghastly hadn't used its ectoplasm to seal his wounds, giving him some of its own essence in the process and turning him into a Ghastly fusion. Link tried to speak to thank the little creatures, but found himself unable to do so. They guided him to their home and invited him to join their little group, and after some thought, he decided being part of a group was better than being alone. Plus, these Ghastly liked him more than the bunnies of his old home. There were Haunter living there too, and they taught Link how to speak with his hands, through gestures and movements.
Link lived among the Ghastly and Haunter for many years, becoming much more proficient at fighting in the process. He learned how to fight cleanly and how to fight dirty, and how to protect himself from attacks. He became good friends with some of the ghosts in the little community, and during a practice battle one day, he felt the power of evolution within him and turned into a Lopunny/Haunter. Two major changes happened in this moment. Firstly, he lost his arms, gaining the Haunter trait of floating hands. Secondly, he gained an extra pair of hands, now having four floating hands. Link also learned the Shadow Punch move upon evolving.
Link continued living among the ghosts for a while longer, but felt restless. Eventually they said a teary goodbye and Link left the Haunted woods, somehow stumbling back into their old home. Link taught the beings of his old home just enough sign language so that he could communicate basic things, claiming to be a wanderer from a far-off land. He recognized many of the older members of the colony, but with his evolution and the added Haunter features, they had no idea it was him. Finding this odd purple and pink Lopunny fusion to be fascinating, the colony welcomed him in, allowing Link to stay as long as he liked.
He didn't want to stay there forever, but Link did find he liked being among the people of his childhood. He even fell in love, briefly. She was a lovely Lopunny/Cinderace. She was a little younger than him - too young to have been one of the bullies who had sent him into the forest in the first place. She did her best to learn as much of his sign language as possible, even using it herself. Eventually however, Link found himself feeling the wanderlust again - much quicker than he had in the ghost village. Possibly because she began talk of settling down and maybe starting a family. He protested and gave her a counter-offer, asking her to come out into the wide unknown with him. It somehow didn't take too much convincing, although perhaps it was because she thought he was taking her to find his parents. He didn't need to find his parents. They'd been old when he was born and had passed naturally while he was gone. It was sad, but he'd processed it by the time he left the colony again.
Link and his sweetheart traveled around the regions, eventually ending up in Sinnoh. She laid a small clutch of eggs. Two of the eggs had neutral colouration, but one was a deep purple like Link. Out hatched a Buneary, a Buneary/Scorbunny and one Buneary/Ghastly. There was an intent to take care of the trio and raise them together, but while Link was out scouting one day, a trainer attacked, capturing her and two of the kits. Link returned to no sign of his family other than the Ghost-Typed child, who had been hidden in a bush. There were many broken Pokéballs scattered around the clearing, hinting at what might have happened.
Without his mate, Link was rather distraught, but he had no choice but to carry on. Especially with a child to care for. They spent some time in the woods together, but Link knew it wouldn't be good for him to raise the child alone. He wanted the child to be able to communicate through something other than just sign language, a skill he was unable to teach.
Looking for a place of safety, he eventually stumbled upon several Pokémon in black bandannas with red R's on them and followed them, his single baby carefully carried by three of his four hands, nestled against his chest fluff. At first he came upon some resistance, but after some frantic signing they found someone who understood sign language and he was able to communicate the basics of his request to them. He needed somewhere safe to raise his child. With a promise of allegiance to their group, Link and his child were allowed to join Team Rocket, Link planning to stick around at least until his child was all grown up. And who knows, perhaps he'll find other reasons to stay in the meantime?
