Getting picked for the national leadership trips in 4-H is a big honor and an exciting opportunity that comes from dedication, involvement, and demonstrating strong leadership skills within the 4-H program. These trips like the National 4-H Conference, Camp Minnewanka, or the National 4-H Congress are designed to develop young people’s leadership abilities, expose them to new ideas, and connect them with other 4-H members from across the country.
The selection process usually begins at the local or state level, where 4-H members first have to demonstrate their commitment to the program. This often includes participating in multiple 4-H projects, community service, leadership roles in clubs, and sometimes competing or presenting at county and state fairs or events. Many states require applicants to complete an application or nomination form that highlights their 4-H achievements, leadership experiences, and goals for attending the national event.
After submitting the application, there is an interview that reviews all candidates. The judges are typically made up of 4-H educators, volunteers, or alumni who evaluate applicants based on their leadership potential, communication skills, involvement in 4-H activities, and passion for community service. Applicants have to answer questions about how they plan to apply what they learn on the trip to their local 4-H community.
Once selected, the chosen delegates usually attend pre-trip meetings to prepare for their leadership experience. These sessions help participants understand the agenda, set goals for what they want to gain, and learn about the responsibilities they’ll have as representatives of their state and the 4-H program. During the trip, members participate in workshops, community service projects, and leadership development activities designed to challenge them and build skills. These trips are competitive, but they’re a fantastic way to grow as a leader and make lifelong connections with other young people who share your passion for service and learning.
National 4-H Congress
I attended National 4-H Congress just a few short weeks after I attended the National 4-H Poulty Judging Contest. I thought that there was no way that another event could be as fun. Congress exceeded my expectations so much and I can not exspress how much fun I had. Meeting people from all across the United States who had just as much love for 4-H as me.
I became very close friends with my fellow Maryland Delegates and even some from other states. I learned a lot about leadership and citizenship in those fast five days. I particpated in communityservice, learning about cultural dancing, formals, and exploring Atlanta!
I would do anything to relive this experience and get to spend time with those friends again. This pushed outside of my comfort zone and even though at times it may have been a little scary, It was the best thing I could have ever done.
