Arithmetic Representation
As they learn, number properties and the 4 operations, children can learn to represent numbers in terms of other numbers & arithmetic operators. This activity is very creative and logical & will open out their out-of-the-box thinking. I will just give 2 such examples without solutions!
Write numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4 in the same order. Inserting any valid arithmetic operator between them, get numbers from 0 to 50.
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10
Use 2 (quantity) 4s (number 4) and using any valid arithmetic operator, get numbers from 1 to 9
4 + √4 = 6
As children proceed to higher classes, they will learn many ways of representing any number using other numbers.
