Math & Sciences - A Symbiotic Relation

Today, the acronym STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) has become a familiar buzzword in school education.

We can see them as the two parents, Science & Math nurturing their off-springs Engineering & Technology. Today we think of science & math as disciplines which have a very close symbiotic relation.

You will be surprised to know that such an understanding is a fairly recent one in the history of science & math.

Their story very much resembles a standard Bollywood movie of the 1980s! Let us trace this story from the beginning and developing in 6 stages.

1. Both Science & Math were born as twins, But for most of history they developed on parallel tracks with very little interaction

2. At the end of the Renaissance period, In the late middle-ages, they discovered each other and that they are related.

3. Then math became a tool-kit for science

4. Later math became the very vehicle on which sciences could ride.

5. In the recent decade, it has become the very engine of development of sciences

6. In this process, math has also developed tools which propel it forward to become useful to almost any scientific investigation.

Today they have are foster-parents of the family of STEM, nurturing Engineering & Technology!
