In 2012, on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the famous Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, Dr Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister, declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day.
Since then, we celebrate 22nd December every year as the National Mathematics Day.
Srinivasa Ramanujan is easily the most famous mathematician from India. You can read more about him and his works in another chapter of this book.
The main goal behind celebrating this day is to raise awareness amongst people about the importance of Mathematics and India’s contributions to mathematics and inspire people to pursue mathematics as a subject
National Mathematics Day is celebrated with numerous educational events held at schools and universities throughout the country.
Some of the activities that can be carried out on that day are
1. Remembering the contributions of Ramanujan and ancient mathematicians like Aryabhatta & Bhaskaracharya.
2. Arrange talks about applications of math to current problems and career opportunities for those who specialize in math.
3. Organize math exhibitions and expositions to bring out the joy and critical thinking skills which can be developed through the study of math and remove the fear of math in the minds of many children.
