•Medial & lateral malleoli

•No rotation

•Normal overlap of tibiofibular joint with anterior tubercle slightly superimposed over fibula

•Talus slightly overlapping the distal fibula

•No overlap of medial talomalleolar articulation

•Tibiotalar joint space

Mortise

•Entire ankle mortise joint shown in profile

•3 sides should be seen

•Distal tibia, fibula & talus

•Talofibular joint open

•Tibiotalar joint open

•No overlap of the anterior tubercle of the tibia and the superolateral portion of the talus with the fibula

Lateral

•Ankle joint centered

•Distal tibia & fibula, talus, calcaneus, & adjacent tarsals

•Ankle true lateral

•Tibiotalar joint well visualized with medial & lateral talar domes superimposed

•Fibula over the posterior half of the tibia

•5th metatarsal base & tuberosity
