In order to involve my students with my journey through Taiwan, I recorded a unique part of Taiwanese life-- the singing garbage truck! Before I shared my own video with students, I first involved them with the See-Think-Wonder strategy so they can make their own connections.
Next, students read an article and engage with a podcast that compares and contrasts garbage removal practices between Taiwan and America.
Finally, students reflect on what makes American culture unique. In this way, they are drawing conclusions about how different cultures experience day-to-day life. This builds the skill of empathy and self-reflection to not only make students more aware of the culture of other places, but also their own.
