Students deserve to be engaged creatively, and this can also sere as an opportunity to expand their empathy and understanding of others.
In order for them to engage with stories in an artistic medium of their choice, students can view stories selected from “Madeintoamerica.org”.
This is a website that compiles stories of immigration to the United States. After students explore, they will find a way to represent the story of their choice through an artistic medium. The story could be one that they write themselves (pulling from their own experience), or that they depict from the website.
Through this resource, I hope students with engage with stories of many different immigrants, exposing them to new voices and voices that might be familiar to them. In this way, I hope to make it clear to my students that creativity and story-writing can specifically be used to connect and engage people of all backgrounds. These stories may be traditionally “under-represented,” and creative pursuits are a way to highlight and bring awareness to these stories.
