In February of 2026, I got to travel to Washington, D.C. for a Global Education Symposium hosted by the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms program. What I experienced was a whirlwind three days where I was welcomed by my cohort of Taiwan trekkers, exposed to critical education concepts surrounding global education, and given the opportunity to explore new parts of a city that I am always keen to visit!
One of our "field trips" involved a trip to the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD). The American Dream Museum was an interactive experience that details the many different avenues that people can develop their talents to succeed with an entrepreneurial spirit.
I was stunned by how beautiful this building was. As it was historically a bank, it preserved many of those features like the bank vault, which is now a "Bank of Presidents." Many of the stories were quite inspirational and even entertaining, like the person who developed a language learning TV show for kids with unique characters and art.
What I was truly impressed by was on the top floor. The ARTEFFECT exhibit was designed and curated by students, and their artwork lined the halls. It was incredible to see the artwork of students who were in 7th grade to high school, who had poured their hard work and talent into an art piece that honored the "Unsung Heroes" of history. This competition is open to all middle and high school students who want to share their artwork. You can find more information about it here.
Ultimately, I left the symposium feeling eager and optimistic. I knew that I was embarking on this journey with an amazing group of educators, traveling to a destination that would inspire and challenge me in equal measure.
I am so ready for the next step, which will be to actually set foot in Taiwan and immerse myself in their education system and culture. I look forward to taking back a wealth of knowledge with me, and sharing it with my students to engage them on a global scale.
